Man of Steel

Man of Steel -watched the latest reboot of a comic book franchise today. Superman remix was alright - I liked the new Krypton with the lead mirrors but I was underwhelmed by the lack of character development and shoddy "action" sequences. Like the reboot of Star Trek - these CGI action sequences dominate the majority of the movie. Death and destruction never looked so seamless or typical. The entire cast is filled with famous folks or recognizable faces who surround the new Superman in an effort to start another world famous sequel machine. If you have a short attention span and like explosions this is a solid distraction from the bills and mortgage. I enjoyed the movie but this not something I would watch again or suggest seeing for anything more than matinee price. C+

Yesterday I watched Hitler's Children on Netflix streaming. Interesting look at the descendants of some of the most notorious members of the Third Reich.

City for Conquest

City for Conquest - James Cagney is an un-ambitious pugilist who just wants to earn enough to be happy. His lifelong girlfriend played by Ann Sheridan wants to be a star hoofer. She is swept off her feet by the excessively oily Anthony Quinn who uses Sheridan as his dance partner. The movie wants to tell the story of New York from the 20s though 1940 following some neighborhood kids. The melodrama features a good cast but the whole effort is hamstrung by a predictable plot and an annoying greek chorus of one. The DVD is a superb collection of newsreels, cartoons and featurettes. It also has an informative commentary by film historian Richard Schickel. A fun cameo by director Elia Kazan as a gangster helps propel the movie forward, Overall the DVD is worth checking out for fans of classic Hollywood. The actual movie is decent but nothing I would revisit.   C+

Mona Lisa y Amy Schumer's insides

finally watched the 80's movie Mona Lisa starring Bob Hoskins on Netflix Streaming yesterday. I liked the scenery and the notion that a pug of man like Hoskins can the lead in a movie. The Neil Jordan directed movie follows an ex-con trying to make his way in the underworld after a stint in jail. He is given the job of driving a high priced hooker around. They have a connection and she exploits his affection to send him searching for a former co-worker. Also look out for the actor that portrays Lester Freeman on the Wire. Overall this movie kept me engaged and it was nice to see Michael Caine as a baddie but this was a one time experience- and even then I finished watching due to inertia more then genuine interest. I did like the location scenes -even the old red light district of London.  C+

The show that has captured my fancy lately is Inside Amy Schumer on Comedy Central - she is pitch perfect as an every woman dealing with issues such as sex and diet. This is the first show since Louie on FX that I feel I want to share with folks - check it out if you can.

my favorite song right now is a pure gimmick - "Farrah Fawcett Hair" from Capitol Cities - but it is fun, first tune I played more than once (actually 5 times yesterday)
