M.I.A. finger malfunctions - world reacts- I guess this eliminated the whispers about the robotic lip-synching by Madonna. The finger still irritates I guess- I know it is an effective way to get heat. Since extending a middle finger to the backup QB in high school led to my last fight in high school and ended my winning streak-lol.

This is probably my favorite use of the middle finger- from Robert Townshend's Hollywood Shuffle

Congrats to local (Virginia Beach,VA ) man for winning one million dollars for his Doritos commercial during the orgy of capitalism that ensued last night.

Of course this is still my favorite halftime show

Super Bowl Sunday

A week after my favorite wrestling concept of the year , it is now time for my favorite sport to take center stage. Yes football is my favorite sport, even aspired to play it as a youth- but it was not to be ( more a transportation issue)

My fave Super Bowl memories- well the Redskins winning 3 of them. I remember having to listen to the Rams and Steelers Superbowl on a transistor radio because our power had been knocked out due to a snowstorm, I remember DJing at the 4400 Campus Club in Norfolk in the 90s and everyone being upset that the Cowboys beat the Steelers. My most vivid memory of the Superbowl is when the Redskins put 35 points on the board in the 2nd quarter of their confrontation with the Denver Broncos- I was still in college. Ferrum College a junior college football factory and my floor in Chapman Hall was the home of most of the freshman football players so after every touchdown the halls were filled with cheering and mayhem.

Tonight I want the Patriots to win, I love their efficient offense when it is clicking and I am hoping they put on a show tonight.

WRESTLING

I really enjoyed Impact from the UK- what a great crowd. I wish that TNA executives would listen to how over Samoa Joe is with live audiences- not just here but also at BFG 2011- he should be a top level guy-he is a unique grappler with tremendous in-ring talent. I am happy they are pushing guys like Roode and Storm, but other guys like Crimson and Gunner do zilch for me. The knockouts division is better than the WWE divas- but there is room for improvement. I loved the idea of a local guy challenging for the X-Division strap and I hope Mark Haskins is doing ok after his horrific bump.

Illegal downloading war continues - the FBI shutdown several sports streaming sites leading into Super Bowl Sunday -

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is currently available on Netflix Streaming- the show still holds up after all these years and is my favorite Trek series bar none. Several Morn sitings in the first 4 episodes.

If you like British comedy I would suggest checking out Peep Show - a really fun britcom where you can actually hear the inner thoughts of the protagonists. If that is too gimmicky and you like sketch comedy check out That Mitchell and Webb look - a very funny series featuring the 2 main characters from Peep Show.

Season one of Luther and Louie are also on Netflix streaming- one funny the other a golden globe winner and both superb.

I honestly don't know who will win the Super Bowl Sunday- but I wouldn't mind the evil Patriots winning-

Bridesmaids

Bridesmaids was a pleasant surprise, sure it had it's sentimental mush, but overall this was a ballsy rollick headlined by SNL cast member Kristen Weig. Ironically I liked this 2 hour long visit with Weig more than many of her reoccurring characters on SNL. She was the perfect best friend in a romantic comedy that also is the romantic lead. Mixing over the top bathroom humor with a superb cast this movie managed to take the notion of a wedding comedy and make it fun for both guys and gals. This is well worth a Netflix slot. B+

I watched part one of the Martin Scorsese documentary about Bob Dylan tonight. I simply love Dylan's lyrics , they are concise and vague at the same time. I loved what I have seen and can't wait to watch part 2 tomorrow on Netflix streaming.

In the 1970s and 1980s before cable , UHF was were it was at for alternative programming from professional wrestling to kung fu theater to the funky grooves of Soul Train. Sadly the host of Soul Train Don Corneluis has passed away, allegedly a suicide (details still coming)

So is it me or did WWE give away a better match on Raw (Punk vs Bryan -champ versus champ) and a better surprise return on Raw(Undertaker) than at the PPV the night before? If you have WWE Classics on Demand they are replaying the Legends of Wrestling episode that covers the territory system. Mick Foley made an appearance on the season finale of Celebrity Wife Swap, he swapped wives with a soap opera star. They showed the Foley family condo in Florida and showed that Foley has issues putting on socks due to the years of physical demands he has put on his body. It is now being rumored that Legends House will be moved to the SyFy network with the delay of the WWE Network. WWE Raw drew it's highest rating since May of 2011.

Royal Rumble 2012

The Rumble is in the books, the undercard felt well like an opening act I wish I had missed- of course I was filled with anticipation for the Rumble match itself. There were many memorable moments in this year's Rumble match , Kofi does a handstand to save himself and then walks on his hands to the steps to get back into the match , Mr Socko tangled with the Cobra , The Road Dogg Billy Gunn and the first Rumble Winner Hacksaw Jim Duggan filled nostalgia slots and Alberto Del Rio's MC entered the rumble in a beat up hooptie- funny stuff. We had a new winner Sheamus - sure Sheamus was prematurely pushed to the top a couple of years ago- but I have always felt that Sheamus had all of the ingredients to be a champion in WWE- so I am happy with his win. I was underwhelmed by the event- but was fine with the Rumble match and it's result.

Someone made a Rumble Highlights package using WWE 12- not 100% the highlights I was looking for - but well made package

Rumors are flying around the internet that Mike Tyson will be inducted in the celeb wing of the WWE Hall of Fame.

My favorite PPV and match type of each year is tonight- the Royal Rumble from WWE. 30 men have a chance to win a main event title shot @ this year's Wrestlemania. While WWE tries to push the notion that anyone can win , it usually is a main-event guy or close to that getting the final shove/push to the top, last year they teased company clown Santino Marella winning the coveted slot, but in the end Mexican aristocrat Alberto Del Rio won the match and got to open Mania. Although the easy choice and pick to win would be Randy Orton, since he is a very over face competing in his hometown , I think announcing his return from injury a week early is an indication that he will not win(I COULD BE WRONG). I think he will be so mad at Wade Barrett that he will be as focused on banishing and beating up the Barrett Barrage as winning the match. I would not mind Sheamus winning, he has been on a major roll, but I don't think that will happen. My favorite scenario would have Chris Jericho(the best in the world at what he does) wins the match and challenges CM Punk( Best in the World) and Daniel Bryan for a unification match at Mania. This is the year to have that match, Rock and Cena is strong enough to fill most of an hour with entrances and whatnot and if HHH fights Taker that will eat up another 30+ minutes, also rumors are running that the Money in Bank PPV has been cancelled to fold that match back into Mania. Also rumors are out there that Cody Rhodes and Goldust may tangle at Mania(although prelim interactions between the 2 seemed to have evaporated).

Could Christian return tonight and help former friend/foe Jericho to the win? I don't know , I am merely speculating, that is the fun of the Royal Rumble, every single countdown leads to endless possibilities ( could Meng return again- I mean Haku), etc.

These are all random notions , not predictions. I guess - I don't know.

All I know is I can't wait for this event.

Spartacus- The acclaimed Oscar picture by legendary director Stanley Kubrick. I love most Kubrick from his early outing the noir heist classic The Killing to his fetish outing Eyes Wide Shut and I wanted to love this sword and sandal opus about the slave uprising in Italy. Although it is a lovely movie with tons of amazing landscapes, interesting training camp scenes and massive pitched battles, the whole enterprise is hamstrung by an annoying and intrusive score. The score really cloys when Jean Simmons and Kirk Douglas lock eyes or interact or canoodle. Is this a terrible movie, no of course not, but for me this classic was something I only want to see once, I think I would even pass on seeing it in a theater. Maybe too much of the plot has been given away over time, or maybe I have seen too many sword and sandal epics recently. I admit it was funny hearing Tony Curtis' pronounced Brooklyn accent in such a setting, but overall this pompous endeavor had me zoning out during it's 3 hour plus running time. B-

Rome - this HBO series ran for 2 seasons. A mixture of debauchery, violence and political maneuvering mixed with a solider buddy cop love affair, I loved this series the first and second time I watched it. I know it is not perfect and maybe a bit over the top with the violence. I also admit I was deliciously distracted by the All Roads lead to Rome feature , a pop-up video device that underscored almost every minute of the series giving background and factoids on the key-players, their gods and the historical circumstances. Worth checking out or Netflixing.

True Grit (2010) & The Trip(2010)

True Grit -The new fangled remix of the old fashioned man hunt was a good supplement to my late luncheon of Kao Pad today. Heilee Stienfeld does an excellent job as the revenge driven child in the wild west. Jeff Bridges is great as the drunken old coot and the Coen brothers do a good job with this remake. Worth checking out on Netflix streaming or Epics if you have either, maybe not an essential classic worth owning, but worth the investment of time to watch. B

The Trip - Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon take a culinary trek north in England , mixing comedy with stunning landscapes and minimalist dishes this is a fun mid-life voyage. Not a rollicking comedy, but it does have some moments of hilarity, including a funny contest of Michael Caine impersonations. Worth streaming if you like Coogan's comedic stylings. B-

Foxy Brown & Buck Rogers in the 25th Century

Foxy Brown (1974)-

Classic blaxploitation flick starring the lovely Pam Grier as the sista with street smarts. Her brother Antonio Fargas is always working the hustle- numbers, pushing, etc. Foxy crosses paths with a notorious sex trade gang due to the nefarious ways of her wayward sibling. Some rather harrowing scenes. Former football player and AWA wrestler Hard-Boiled Haggerty is part of the second act problem when he takes liberties with the lead character while she is tied to bed and strung out on heroin. Some funny scenes and vintage clothing make this a decent time capsule for the era- not something to go bid crazy for on eBay- but not a bad choice for a retro movie. The DVD has a commentary track by the director. C+

Buck Rogers in the 25^th Century (1979-1980)

Gil Gerrard is Captain William “Buck” Rogers – he wakes up in the future and is constantly saving the world while Wilma Dering (Erin Grey) and Princess Ardala (Pamela Hensley) vie for his thick-thighed attention. In the episode Escape from Wedded Bliss-Ardala blackmails Buck into marrying her. As part of Draconian custom he must fight Tiger Man (Played by pro wrestler Hard-Boiled Haggerty) to prove his worthiness as the royal groom. This episode features a roller disco reception that has to be seen to be believed. The entire series is on DVD- very cheesy 70s sci-fi – this series only lasted 2 seasons. The real standout episode for so bad it’s awesome fun is the “Space Rockers” episode featuring Jerry Orbach and Richard Moll. I loved this show as a kid – and still have a crush on Erin Grey( she looked incredible when I met her at a con a few years back). Unless you have nostalgia for the show or love low brow sci-fi this is not worth seeking out. C+

Goldfinger and The Godfather

Goldfinger (1964) – Hollywood went to central casting for this odd job- and got Harold Sakata – who wrestled as Tosh Togo to be the menacing henchman in this Sean Connery classic James Bond movie. A solid action movie still worth seeing for 007 fans and for action fans- still holds up against today’s action movies-although this movie seems reserved in it ‘s stunts compared to modern Bond flicks- Connery more than compensates with his macho swagger.. Sakata appeared in several movies and television shows including The Wrestler- but was usually cast as the domineering bad guy. A

My first encounter with the Godfather saga was the Mad Magazine parody- actually that was usually my first encounter with any action movie that came out when I was growing up. Because my mother eschewed macho movies for more family friendly children’s movies like Fantasia and Pollyanna – the upside is that she did get Mad Magazine every month for years- so I got to experience Mad parodies of such classics as the Shindig and SuperDooperMan instead of seeing their cinematic counterparts.

The Godfather is breathtaking in its violence (memorable executions) and its beauty (the Italian countryside, the lovely bride). This classic film from Francis Ford Coppola features a superb cast that includes film noir stalwarts like Sterling Hayden (Asphalt Jungle) and Richard Conte (The Big Combo) along with several A-List superstars (Pacino, Duvall , Brando ,etc.) . Do yourself a favor and don’t settle for the commercially interrupted versions that Spike offer – this is worth owning and if you are not the type that owns DVDs or Blu-Ray- at least watch this movie one time in your life intact-or if you ever can in the theater..

Luca Brasi was portrayed by longtime grappler Lenny Montana( he also appears in the hilarious Steve Martin vehicle The Jerk from 1979 as a con man) – he is the scary man reciting his speech for the don at the wedding scene that openings the picture. Ironically Montana also spent some time in the mob (according to his Wikipedia page).

Thank you to Sheldon Goldberg for clueing me in regarding Montana’s contribution to this cinematic masterpiece and giving me an excuse to watch this movie again. A+

Against All Odds

Against All Odds (1984 Columbia Pictures)

This Taylor Hackford retelling of the classic noir Out of the Past features Jeff Bridges pursuing Rachel Ward( hot body- but such a mom haircut in this movie) to Mexico. Bridges is a recently cut wide-out for the fictional Los Angeles Outlaws. He is also hiding a debt to a bookie. In order to earn his way free he agrees to track down the daughter of the team owner. When he finally finds her- they start to canoodle in the jungle and the ocean and in a hut and in some ruins. Former NFL great and part time grappler Alex Karras is also retained by the bookie to find his wayward WR and ex-girlfriend .This movie features some terrible over-acting, cliché dialogue and some great on-location scenery. The macho car chase at the beginning of the movie between the waived receiver and the smarmy gambler portrayed by James Woods is a decent scene. The movie is also redeemed by Kid Creole and the Coconuts performing “My Male Curiosity” in a night club- that redemption is doubled with the full video being included on the DVD. The DVD includes audio commentary by the director, deleted scenes and trailers for some superior Jeff Bridges movies (The Last Picture Show and Starman). This is not something to seek out- although Rachel Ward’s overacting is always great for a soundbite or mashup. The DVD also has the video for the title song sung by Phil Collins.

The movie is compelling in part because of the great score and soundtrack – but hindered by a plot that feels part Out of the Past and part Chinatown. In an attempt to add to the noir credibility of the film, veteran actor Richard Widmark (Kiss of Death, Night and the City) is the evil man in the shadows. C-

Boardwalk Empire Season 1

Boardwalk Empire has all the elements to be my new favorite television show. However it ain't. I mean Steve Buscemi is aces as Nucky the corrupt county treasurer and his adversary the seemingly pious prohibition officer are interesting. I love the sets and the wardrobe on this show that strives to be overly accurate. For me the show falls down when it follows the moody Jimmy Darmody , I understand he is a veteran of the gruesome great war, but what a jerk. I know Nucky is a charming man who will order murder when he has to, but his character is fleshed out to perfection by veteran actor Steve Buscemi. Michael Shannon is riveting as the driven and conflicted prohibition officer Nelson Van Alden, although his righteousness can be a bit over the top at times. I wanted to love Michael Kenneth Williams as Chalky White, and maybe I will get into the character more during the Klan war in season 2.

But I am not emotionally invested in the characters, I watched season 1 box set more out of inertia than sheer want-to. Is Boardwalk Empire terrible,no. I just know I am not subscribing to HBO simply to watch it.

RIP Ken Russell

Director Ken Russell passed away at the age of 84 on Sunday. He directed one of my favorite movies of all time -Altered States. An exploration of the collective consciousness starring William Hurt as an obsessed academic who experiments with isolation chambers, blood rituals and drugs to learn more and to seek more knowledge. An interesting movie that is visually stimulating and intellectually challenging, a rarity in other words. Altered States is well worth owning, but if you want to sample before you buy you can Netflix this title.

Russell also directed the rock opera Tommy featuring music from the Who and others. Many remember this scene featuring Ann Margaret

I always love seeing movies and TV shows from the past that show their version of the future and then we past the date of the future past .

Yesterday I watched the ultra-cheesy very bad but compelling schlock opera The Apple

Love duet between the 2 leads after they have seperated by BIM

Bibi's big hit? An anthem for uppers!

My wife mentioned it seemed like someone was bucking to make a new Rocky Horror Picture Show, I don't know- she also said that the movie was a tax shelter.

IN the late 70s my favorite television show was Buck Rogers- the goofiest episode was the Space Rockers with Jerry Orbach as an evil music producer- the costumes , dancing and music remind me of the "Do The Bim" sequence from the trailer.

For awhile Space Rockers replaced The Bad Bunch by Greydon Clark as the video I had to show company. Bad Bunch is a low budget race relations movie shot in Watts in the 70s by director Greydon Clark (Joysticks, Final Justice,Skinheads) I snagged this out of PVM bin at Blockbuster.

Ok I am off the original tangent of this blog - so now the other scene I used to show visitors at the old Norfolk apartment in Ghent.

TNA Bound for Glory 2011 from Philadelphia, PA

Kicked off with an X-Division title match between Austin Aires and Brian Kendrick –the first hour of the show was action packed –sure some of the results were annoying- but the pace of the action and the energy of the crowd kept me hyped up for TNA’s signature event. Austin Aires retained the X-Division strap in a decent match against Brian Kendrick, he gained the pinfall with a brainbuster. The crowd was fully behind the arrogant Aires. Momentum was briefly quelled during a backstage sequence with Karen Jarrett and Tracy Brooks.

Former ECW rivals RVD and Jerry Lynn returned to the city of brotherly love for a full metal mayhem match. Using a variety of hardware this match garnered several ECdub chants from the Philly fans. RVD won the match by pinning Jerry Lynn with a ladder. After the match the long time rivals buried the hatchet and shook hands.

Next up was mid-card mayhem as former world champion Samoa Joe continues to be booked into obscurity. He lost the 3-way bout to Crimson after Matt Morgan attempted a Carbon footprint and then Crimson speared the Samoan submission machine. I think TNA should trade Samoa Joe for John Morrison- both guys are talented- but they obviously need new homes..

Anderson Anderson beat Bully Ray in their falls count anywhere match by hitting Bully Ray with a Mic-Check through a ringside table after overshooting on a swanton.

Eric Bicshoff is seen backstage talking to referee Jackson James. It is revealed that James is actually Eric’s son. This news seems to flabbergast the announce team of Taz and Tenay.

Things got worse as the knockouts division visited an atrocity upon my screen. Instead of a competitive 4 way match for the Knockouts belt- we got Karen Jarrett playing rudo ref and refusing to help the faces get the win. After several minutes of useless action Jarrett is finally taken out of the match and Velvet Sky manages to get the win and become the new Knockouts champion.

Long time TNA competitors AJ Styles and Christopher Daniels had an ok “I Quit” match- ok for anyone else maybe- but below the very high standards these two excellent grapplers usually live up to. AJ Styles won the match when Daniels quit and ran when AJ picked up a screwdriver.

Jeff Jarrett confronted Jeff Hardy- this basically lead to an in-ring pull apart with refs and backstage officials. A big D-Lo chant broke out for D-Lo Brown.

I am not a Hulk Hogan fan- I never quite understood his appeal. But when he is on- he is on and tonight the Philly crowd wanted to share some love with the Hulkster. The actual fight portion of the Hulk Hogan and Sting confrontation was rather lame. The highlight of the early portion of this segment was Ric Flair being Hogan’s second. Sting bounced around for Hogan a bit. The Sting got some punches in. Things got interesting after Hogan submitted to the Scorpion Deathlock. At first Immortal came out and beat the tar out of Sting. They showed Abyss peaking through the curtain- but he did not intervene. The only person that stood up to the onslaught was the ref Jackson James. He was rewarded for his valor by getting a chair shot from his father Eric Bischoff. As Sting was getting dragged down he begged Hogan to help him. Hogan helped Sting – it was the loudest pop of the night – the Philly crowd loved good guy Hogan and went nuts for the team of Sting and Hogan. This was the Hogan moment that TNA had paid for 2 years ago- the Philly crowd simply ate up Hulkamania and loved the moment.

The main event of the evening was the culmination of a 13 year journey by former Tag Team Champion Bobby Roode. He had managed to win the Bound For Glory series and had even managed beat his buddies in Fortune and hold his own start to look legitimate as a contender for the top prize in the company. He battled champion Kurt Angle in a solid match where they traded holds on the canvas and tried to get the other to submit. Eventually Angle won the match by using the ropes for leverage while Roode’s hand was under the ropes. It was an anti-climatic end to a solid PPV.

Hulk Hogan stole the show- sure he annoys me when cuts 15 minute promos and his matches are not the athletic spotfests that I tend to favor , but tonight he managed to elicit true emotion out of the crowd and made a special moment and memory for the crowd watching in the arena and at home.

Bound For Glory 2011 was inconsistent at times and I was not a fan of finish for the main event – but overall it was a decent show with some good matches and great energy from the crowd. Is this an event I would suggest purchasing –nope- but I do not regret purchasing it myself. B-

Well I attempted to get back in the saddle – local wrestler Nate Mustang informed me that he would be wrestling at a fair in Gloucester, VA. So I became obsessed with the notion of going to this event- ok normally would I travel 90 minutes for an indie show- no- I loathe driving. But luckily I found someone that wanted to go and carpooled with them. So after a rendezvous at the HH Greg parking lot we got into a rental vehicle guided by a GPS and headed out for trek north. I tried calling the cancellation line as we drove up since it was overcast, but I kept getting a recording talking about a softball tournament on July 24. Either way we kept going. When we finally got to the park and got situated and got into the shuttle that was when we found out that the wrestling event was rained out because the promoter was worried about his HIGH DOLLAR MATS. So we turned around and ending up eating dinner at Harpoon Larry’s in Hampton- excellent food a little pricey- but worth the splurge.

RIP – Randy “Macho” Man Savage- according to reports from TMZ online( and later confirmed by WWE.COM and broadcast on HLN)- Savage passed away due to a heart attack while driving. No matter how I put this- I will understate his impact on the world of professional wrestling. He was the ultimate performer mixing in–ring skill with amazing promos and a larger than life persona. From his unforgettable entrance to his lovely manager Miss Elizabeth- Randy “Macho Man” Savage personified the perfect mix of classic wrestling acumen and showmanship. His promos were instantly quotable and he backed that up in the ring with matches that consistently stole the show. From the biggest stage (his match at Wrestlemania III in front of 93,000 with Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat that is still cited by many as the best match in the history of Wrestlemania) to his early work before the WWF- his high octane offense was something to behold. From the Mega-Powers to the Match Made in Heaven his character developed into one of the most beloved wrestlers in WWF history. In WCW his feud with Diamond Dallas Page helped elevate DDP to the next level. In another memorable cameo – Randy Savage portrayed Bonesaw in one the biggest movies of all time Spiderman- and he managed to steal the scene once again. I know I am missing memorable moments- but I know that most people reading this are filling them in and doing it better justice than my words.Often imitated( I know most people reading this have said “Oh Yeah” “Dig It” or Slap into a Slim Jim “ copying his signature vocal style) – Savage will never be duplicated. Thank you for the memories.

The modern information is great for so many things- need to know about a topic in an argument- no longer do you have to wait to get home to answer the query- now you type in the subject and google,wiki,etc. will give you any number of links with the answer.Is the internet always accurate- no - of course not- but usually you can find the correct details on whatever you are discussing.

The downside is - the current need for constant information and to be the first to break new news has lead to a ton of spoilers- especially in professional wrestling-it is one thing to say Spoiler inside- it is another to post pictures of the event that has yet to air or pictures showing a new champion or using that information as header- it is frustrating - but I guess expected.
